Press Release: Volunteer – Shave – Spray – Get online – Save lives
5 December 2011 marked International Volunteer Day –
a day that provides the opportunity for the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) to let volunteers know how important their role is in the fight against cancer.
“Thanks to the involvement of the 2011 Shavathon volunteers at 250 shopping centres and at 220 workplaces, we raised R7.1 million so that CANSA can continue providing our service to the community and support to cancer survivors”, says CANSA’s Chief Business Development Officer, Rachel Wall.
“The funds raised helped us to provide our wide-reaching health programme of prevention and education campaigns, CANSA Care Centres that offer stoma and lymphoedema clinics, medical equipment hire, toll-free line and support to children and their families affected by cancer.”
The 2012 Shavathon days are on Thursday to Sunday 1 – 4 March and CANSA encourages companies and individuals to help make a difference once again. Family and friends, workplace staff, visitors, clients and suppliers can shave or spray in a multitude of colours and show solidarity with a cancer survivor for a R50 donation, children under 12 pay R25. Again, there’ll be two corporate Shavathon days on Thursday and Friday 1 & 2 March. The public can participate on Saturday and Sunday 3 & 4 March at their nearest shopping centre.
New for CANSA Shavathon 2012 is an online platform for volunteers and corporate South Africa to take part as ‘Champions’ by raising funds online and lots of prizes can be won.
