Media Release: Join SA Champions – Join Shavathon 2012

The Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) invites all South Africans to join them in celebrating by taking part in its 9th annual Shavathon. “You can help everyone who has ever been touched by cancer by registering your workplace today and ordering supplies to host your own Shavathon event during the 1st and 2nd of March or participate at one of the public events on the 3rd of March,” says Rachel Wall, CANSA’s Chief Business Development Officer. Last year 250 shopping centres and 220 workplaces helped raise R7.1 million for CANSA’s support services.

This year internationally acclaimed music band, Freshlyground, has pledged their support of CANSA by giving CANSA rights to use their music in the radio and TV ads to promote CANSA Shavathon.   An article in Time Magazine describes them as the personification of the Rainbow Nation – “mixing not only race and gender but also nationality, musical style, language, age and even height…”

“It is a privilege to be part of something bigger than yourself and help make a difference in the lives of people who have to face the difficult journey of cancer,” says Freshlyground lead singer, Zolani Mahola. As the band whose collaboration with Shakira, ‘Waka Waka’, sold over a million singles and reached number 1 in 19 countries world wide, we’re confident their voice will be heard for cancer survivors across the country.

Show your support by shaving or spraying in a multitude of colours to support cancer survivors for a R50 donation, children under 12 pay R25. Colour-spray your hair with stencils in the shape of a star, butterfly, flower, soccer ball, lightning bolt or ‘warrior’ word design and make a difference.

About CANSA and CANSA Shavathon

  • This is the 9th national CANSA Shavathon, independently managed by CANSA staff and volunteers. Losing one’s hair is a common side-effect of cancer therapy – so shaving your head has become a symbolic gesture of support for cancer survivors. Colouring your hair has become an option for those who prefer not to shave.  CANSA Shavathon is being held in over 300 workplaces and organisations on 1 & 2 March, and in over 200 shopping centres on 3rd & 4th March 2011.
  • CANSA offers a unique integrated service to the public and all people affected by cancer. As a leading role-player in cancer research (more than R6 million spent annually), the scientific findings and knowledge gained from our research are used to realign our health programmes as well as strengthen our watchdog role to the greater benefit of the public.
  • Our wide-reaching health programme includes prevention and education campaigns, CANSA Care Centres that offer stoma and lymphoedema clinics, medical equipment hire, toll-free line and support to children and their families affected by cancer. Patient care and support in the form of 13 CANSA Care Homes and the main metropolitan areas plus one hospitium (based in Polokwane) for out-of-town cancer patients as well as CANSA-TLC Lodging for paediatric oncology parents.
