my story is a bit different. I spry my head every year to support a cause that i near to my heart. About 8months ago I noticed a bald spot on my head and my hair is falling out the doctors kept on telling me it is stress and i had to find away to deal with it. And the spot getting bigger by the day. So this Year I told every one that I'm going to shave my head maybe the hair will grow back with the rest. The guy that was shaving heads that day was shocked when i said to cut my hair and he asked me over and over again if i was sure. So he started and as the hair fell to the ground he turned white. After he did he spoke to my mom how shaved her head to. and i could see something was wrong. I only knew about the big bald spot but there was 9 other spots. To make a long story short. I found out that i have Alopecia areata and it will go over in Universalis. If it wasn't for the shavathon i will still be crying my eyes out every morning not knowing why I was losing my hair. I will still support the Cansa Shavathon every year but shaving is out because my hair will never grow back.

Life is a journey, a journey we all have to take, on the way there is a smooth road that we tread on, and alwasy we can not escapes the bumps.there is a time that comes when we are all faced with problems no matter how small they may seem or how big it becomes, but we must take a moment and remember that out there is someone who is worse off than us.For all those cancer patients no matter how young or old you maybe, I salute you, it takes a lote of courage to face this big bad illness, to walk around with a brave smile of hope. My mum bravel fought the battle and is thankfully in remission and had two more who bravely fought the illness but we have recently lost another to to the illness. Many have lost the battle and many solider on bravely. For a woman, it is difficult to lose her hair as it is her pride and beauty.I recently started to lose my hair, reason unknown, and thought of all the brave ones out there who has to go through the treatment and take each day as it comes, so without a second thought I went out on the weekend of the shavathon and took off my hair. I STAND UP TO CANCER....will you!!!!

Dear Dad.
You passed away 5 years ago from brain cancer, you were my best friend, dad and mom. I miss you so much every day.
When I shaved my head I thought of you the whole time. I did`nt know how you felt and all the pain you suffered, and the scars on your head from the op, but I did know you were a strong person and fought with all you have but it was your time. Mom has got breast cancer now, yes I found her just before you passed away, she went the funeral. I know you are at a beter place now without pain and suffering, but there comes times and my life when I need you so much. Your sister told me since you were in school your biggest fear was to get cancer, I just wish there was more I could have done when you were still with us. I got tears in my eyes on the 6th when I shaved my head, every one said I had allot of guts to shave my head, for me it wasnt about guts, it was for a good cause. I couldn`t have helped you dad, but now I can help other even if it is only R50.00. Dad I miss you and love you lots. Just wish you were here to see me with my shaved head.
all my love your Awie

Dear Stuart
There are quite a number of schools who took part in Shavathon 2010. Contact Margie Laubscher at mlaubscher@cansa.org.za for more details. Perhaps you could phone them and find out what their policies are regarding Shavathon and then let your son's school know. Who knows, next year they may want to host their own Shavathon event. It was a wonderful gesture on your son's part to shave his head and for you to sit detention with him. However, schools have a lot of red tape to consider, so see if you can present them with some information that will help them to cut through it.
