Fighting cancer the Shavathon way

Thank you South Africa for making this the biggest Shavathon ever!

CANSA Shavathon 2010 was a huge success thanks to all the South Africans who pulled together and showed solidarity with cancer survivors at their schools, work places and at shopping venues countrywide. Shavathon has once more succeeded in uniting the nation in the fight against cancer! For more information read the latest press release.

“CANSA would like to thank the 194 shopping venues and 280 work places that participated in this year’s Shavathon, thereby giving South Africans the opportunity to help us fight cancer in such a substantial and memorable way”, says CANSA’s CEO and cancer survivor of over 25 years, Sue Janse van Rensburg.

Shavathon 2010 managed to top the fantastic support of Shavathon 2009, in which 150 000 people took part, raising R6 million! In 2009, 200 work places and 137 shopping venues participated. To view 2010 campaign statistics thus far, click here.

2010 has confirmed spraying as a popular alternative to shaving and at certain venues, braiding of hair was also done. Stencils also enjoyed huge success. However, many brave ladies (with long hair) and gents shaved off their glorious locks for this worthy cause. CANSA is truly thankful! The 7th national CANSA Shavathon, is the 2nd Shavathon to be independently managed by CANSA staff and volunteers. A special word of thanks to all staff, volunteers, media, celebrities and sponsors who helped make this event such a tremendous success. CANSA would be lost without your support. Most importantly, thanks to all the men, women and children who remembered loved ones lost to cancer or honoured those who are fighting the disease, by taking part or making a donation.

The total amount raised will be made public in early April 2010. Early indicators show that financial targets set last year are very likely to be achieved. Click here to find out how funds raised at Shavathon 2010 will be used to fight cancer in our communities.

If your school, work place or organization would like to take part in CANSA Shavathon 2011, or if you would like your shopping venue to participate, please contact CANSA now and challenge your competition to do so too!
